How DeckScout Works
Three Steps to the Right Deck Builder
Most directories rank whoever pays the most. DeckScout starts with public records and lets you decide who to call.
We Research Every Builder
We list deck builders across nine counties and look them up in the records most homeowners never check: the NC general contractor license database, county permit data and reviews on more than one site.
You Compare Side by Side
See license status, the materials each builder installs, the towns they serve and real project photos in one place, instead of opening a dozen browser tabs and guessing.
You Choose Who Hears From You
Pick the builders you want quotes from. We don't blast your phone number to every contractor in the region, and there's never a charge for homeowners.
What We Check
Eight Things We Check on Every Builder
These are the facts that separate a solid deck builder from a risky one. Paying for a listing never changes any of them.
NC License Status
Whether the builder holds an NC general contractor license, which the state requires for jobs of $40,000 or more.
Insurance
Proof of general liability coverage, plus workers' comp for builders with three or more employees, as NC law requires.
County Permit History
Deck permits on record where counties publish the data, starting with Mecklenburg's public building permit records.
Manufacturer Certifications
Brand programs such as TrexPro or TimberTech registered contractor status, confirmed against the manufacturer's own locator.
Reviews Across Sites
Ratings and review counts from more than one platform, so one glowing profile can't hide a pattern of complaints.
Real Project Photos
Photos of decks the builder actually built, not stock images or manufacturer brochure shots.
Response Time
How quickly builders answer homeowners who contact them through DeckScout, because a builder who never calls back isn't an option.
Where They Actually Work
The towns and counties a builder really serves, so a Charlotte crew isn't presented as local to Morganton.

What a DeckScout Comparison Looks Like
Every builder profile puts the same facts in the same place, so you can line them up and compare.
| Builder | NC GC License | Deck Permits on Record | Materials | Serves | Listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sample Builder A | Active | Shown from county records | Composite, PVC | Mooresville, Cornelius, Davidson | Featured |
| Sample Builder B | None found | Shown from county records | Pressure-treated, cedar | Hickory, Newton, Conover | Verified Pro |
| Sample Builder C | Active | Shown from county records | Composite, wood | Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis | Free listing |
"None found" isn't automatically a red flag: most deck jobs cost less than $40,000, the point where North Carolina requires a general contractor license. It does change your protections, as the FAQ below explains.
Where We Cover
Deck Builders Across Nine NC Counties
From I-77 and Lake Norman west along I-40 and US 321 into the Foothills, every county builds decks a little differently. Here's what changes the job in each one.
Mecklenburg County
Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Matthews, Mint Hill
Mecklenburg publishes its building permits as open data, so this is where permit history on a builder's profile goes deepest. Many newer neighborhoods also require HOA approval before a permit is filed.
Iredell County
Mooresville, Statesville, Troutman
Mooresville's long stretch of Lake Norman shoreline falls under Duke Energy's shoreline management rules, so waterfront decks and docks need approvals an inland deck never does.
Catawba County
Hickory, Newton, Conover, Maiden
With Lake Hickory to the north and Lake Norman's west shore to the east, Catawba builders handle both lakefront work and the rolling lots common around Hickory.
Gaston County
Gastonia, Belmont, Mount Holly, Cramerton
Lake Wylie and the South Fork Catawba River put many Belmont and Cramerton homes on the water, where shoreline rules shape the deck size and placement.
Lincoln County
Lincolnton, Denver
Denver and the west shore of Lake Norman along NC 16 are among the fastest-growing parts of the region, which keeps good deck builders booked well ahead in spring.
Alexander County
Taylorsville
Rural, sloped lots toward the Brushy Mountains often mean tall, elevated decks, where post sizing, bracing and footing design matter more than the decking itself.
Caldwell County
Lenoir, Granite Falls
Foothills slopes and Lake Rhodhiss frontage around Granite Falls call for builders who are comfortable with steep grades and multi-level designs.
Burke County
Morganton, Valdese
Lake James sits on Burke's western edge, and mountain views from Morganton-area lots make covered and elevated decks a popular request.
Cabarrus County
Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg
Fast-growing subdivisions off I-85 mean most deck projects start with an HOA architectural review, so ask whether a builder will prepare those drawings for you.

Materials
Wood vs. Composite in North Carolina
Humid Piedmont summers, strong sun and the occasional ice storm all take a toll on decking. Here's the quick version of the trade-off.
Pressure-Treated Wood
- Lowest up-front cost and the most common choice in the region
- Needs regular care: cleaning plus a fresh sealer or stain every few years
- Can warp, check and splinter as boards dry out after humid summers
- Easy to repair one board at a time, with no color-matching
Composite Decking
- Higher up-front cost, usually well above pressure-treated pine
- No staining or sealing, and boards resist rot and insects
- Dark colors get hot in direct afternoon sun, so color choice matters
- Still needs good framing underneath, plus the joist spacing and ventilation the manufacturer requires
Why DeckScout
A Directory Built for Homeowners, Not Lead Brokers
You Pick Who Hears From You
Many lead sites sell one request to several contractors at once. On DeckScout, only the builders you choose get your details.
Paid Spots Are Labeled
Builders can pay for a Featured spot on a city page. When they do, the listing says "Featured," every time, with no exceptions.
Ratings Can't Be Bought
Position on a page can be bought. License status, permit history and review data can't, and nobody gets called "recommended" without being vetted.
Questions
Deck Builder FAQs for Charlotte, Lake Norman & Hickory
Who are the best deck builders in Charlotte, Lake Norman and Hickory?
There is no single best deck builder for every project, and DeckScout does not label any builder as recommended until we have vetted them. The strongest builders in the Charlotte, Lake Norman and Hickory area share the same verifiable traits: an active NC general contractor license where the job requires one, current liability and workers' compensation insurance, a record of permitted decks in your county, certification from the decking brand you want, and consistent reviews across more than one site. DeckScout shows those facts side by side so you can compare builders on evidence instead of advertising.
How do I choose a deck builder in the Charlotte area?
Get two to four written quotes for the same scope, materials and railing so the prices are comparable. Check each builder's NC license on the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors lookup, and ask for a certificate of insurance before any work starts. Ask who pulls the county building permit; the answer should be the builder, not you. Look at decks they have finished in your county, especially on lots like yours, whether that is a sloped Caldwell County yard or a Lake Norman waterfront. Be wary of large cash deposits and quotes that skip footings, ledger flashing or inspections. Our guide to choosing a deck builder in North Carolina covers each step.
Does a deck builder need a license in North Carolina?
North Carolina requires a general contractor license from the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors for any project costing $40,000 or more. The threshold rose from $30,000 on October 1, 2023. Many deck jobs fall under that amount, so plenty of deck builders work legally without a state license. The difference matters when something goes wrong: the board cannot investigate an unlicensed contractor, and the NC Homeowners Recovery Fund only covers losses caused by licensed general contractors. DeckScout shows each builder's license status so you know which situation you are in.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Mecklenburg, Iredell or Catawba County?
In most cases, yes. New decks and deck rebuilds in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba and the other counties DeckScout covers generally need a residential building permit and inspections under the North Carolina Residential Code. Inspections typically cover footings, framing and a final. Waterfront projects on Lake Norman, Lake Wylie or Lake James can also need Duke Energy shoreline approval, and many Cabarrus and Mecklenburg subdivisions require HOA architectural approval first. A reputable builder pulls the permit in their own name. Confirm the details with your county inspections office before work starts.
Is wood or composite decking better for North Carolina's climate?
Both work in the Piedmont and Foothills when they are built correctly. Pressure-treated pine costs the least up front but needs cleaning and a fresh sealer or stain every few years to handle humid summers and strong sun. Composite brands such as Trex, TimberTech and Fiberon cost more up front, never need staining, and resist rot and insects, though dark boards get hot in direct sun and still need occasional washing to prevent mildew. Either way, the framing underneath is usually pressure-treated lumber, so footing depth, ledger flashing and ventilation matter more than the boards you choose.
How does DeckScout make money?
Every deck builder in our area gets a free basic listing. Builders can pay for an upgraded Verified Pro profile, which adds a website link, click-to-call, a quote form and project photos, or for one of three Featured spots on a city page. Paid placements are always labeled Featured. Payment can change where a builder appears on a page, but it never changes their license status, permit history, review data or any rating DeckScout shows. That rule is what keeps the comparison useful to homeowners.
Is DeckScout free for homeowners?
Yes. Browsing builders, comparing them and requesting quotes through DeckScout costs homeowners nothing, and there is no obligation to hire anyone. When you fill out the form, you choose which builders hear from you, so your phone number is not sold to a long list of contractors. You can also skip the form entirely, contact a builder directly, or call DeckScout with questions about your project in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, Gaston, Lincoln, Alexander, Caldwell, Burke or Cabarrus County.
